Easter Camping Fun With The Drydens & Anzac Weekend - Sunday 4th May 2014

Happy Easter to all you beautiful people that even after 8 months (can you believe) are still coming back to read my blog (I'm not sure why)!!! I hope you all had relaxing weekends off work, uni or life and stuffed yourselves silly with chocolate!

In the week leading up to Easter, I had a fairly quiet week at work, only going in the lab once for a trial which I had to analyse blood and spending the rest of my time helping Briar with more of her data processing. The lack of testing this week was quite good as it meant I got to chill out a little after a couple of very busy and full on weeks and also meant I got to go over and spend a morning in Exercise Rehab which I always enjoy.

So the more interesting part...what I got up to for Easter and for those of you that read the last blog, did I survive camping?

On Easter Friday, me and Darc were up nicely and early to squeeze in a quick 5k run before setting off for a weekend of camping in Yackandandah with his family. Now I had no idea where this place was either but I can tell you it's a 3 hour drive from Melbourne, in Victoria and close to the New South Wales border. It's a very small town with nothing there, but it's the family campsite each year as his grandparents live there on a farm with a large, secluded field at the back of the house, where you guessed it, we camped with toilet facilities consisting of bushes and a hole. On the way to Yack, Darc took me through Beechworth, an old gold mining town, where we stopped for lunch and a look around. It was so picturesque and was exactly like an old Victorian town with the old fashioned buildings and shops, such as the old sweet shop and bakery, which did absolutely delicious pies. Beechworth is also the town in which Ned Kelly (a famous Australian bush ranger) was held in prison and trialled in court. We went into the courthouse where he was trialled to have a look around as it still had all the original furnishings. It was pretty cool and we got to stand in the dock and sit in the judges chair. We also got to look around in all of the side rooms such as the judges room and the library, which contained over a hundred of the big old hardback law books. We also went to the prison where Ned was held, but unfortunately didn't do a tour around it.

I guess I was a little nervous at first of meeting all Darc's family, but very quickly by the time we had pitched our tent, the nerves were gone and I had nothing to worry about! There were 5 different families altogether, with Darc's cousins ranging from age 4 to 21 and it made for a really good group and a good laugh. Typically it poured just before we pitched our tent, while we was helping Darc's mum and Grant pitch their marquee/covering, but luckily it wasn't enough to do any damage and that was the only rain we had all weekend, with the rest of the time having lovely weather, so nice infact everyone caught a colour and got a little burnt on the Saturday. It was such a relaxed and chilled weekend spending mornings and evenings cooking on and chilling around the camp fire and the days being worn out by the kids. There was a great steep hill leading down to our campsite and all weekend we had great fun riding the BMX bikes and a billy kart (basically a toboggan on wheels without breaks) down the hill and over bumps the boys had made. It was absolutely great fun, with the game turning into a) see how many people we can get on the kart and b) see how close we could get the kart to the next drop/hill leading into the lake! The only not so joyous part of the whole billy kart experience was lugging the bloody 20kg thing up and down the hill what felt like hundreds of times! On Easter Sunday as soon as we were up, the kids (including us big kids) did the traditional Dryden Easter egg hunt around the field which resulted in tons of chocolate, most of which I saw all around the younger ones faces! We also got the motorbikes out on Sunday afternoon which was good fun and a first for me, and after clinging on to Darc for dear life, I also had a go at taking the drivers seat, which I began to get sort of good at, picking up the speed slightly as the confidence grew (I didn't move out of second gear still).

On the Monday it was the dreadful time to pack up *sigh* and head back to Shepparton. It didn't actually take too long to pack up and by 11 we made time for the last couple of gos on the billy kart before heading off. We stopped via another of Darc's grandparents for lunch on the way back to Shep before enjoying a nice shower and quiet and chilled night. We stayed in Shep until Wednesday morning and didn't really get up to much except go for a long run on Tuesday morning and take a trip into town in the afternoon.

On Thursday I headed back into work as one of the guys in the office had testing on which I said I would help with. This just involved me running and analysing blood, like I usually do, so nothing too difficult and it was a fairly short day. The office was generally dead though as Friday was also a bank holiday for us - Anzac Day (war memorial day) so I imagine most people just took the days between the public holidays off.

On Anzac Day (Friday 25th) Darc had a work trip organized to a high wire and zip wire place in Mornington Pennisula which I was able to go along to too and it was great fun going round an obstacle course in the trees on a harness finishing each level with a zip wire. In the evening we headed back via his Dad's to have a nice dinner cooked by Ben and Bec before heading to the cinema to see The Other Woman, which was absolutely hilarious and a must see for all you out there - I had tears at one point (and guys it is not a massive chick flick, Darc and Ben enjoyed it!). It was late by the time we got back to Melbourne and after a great week I was very tired and crashed immediately.

Last week at work there were a few studies going on that I helped out and got involved with but it was fairly quiet other than that and people still seemed to be absent in the office. As it was quiet and I didn't have much desk work to do, it meant I got to catch up on a couple of Human Phys lectures that I have been listening to to try and bring my knowledge up to scratch, but that was as exciting as it got! On Thursday as part of Jess' study (where I had the biopsies done) I got to have a DEXA scan which shows body composition of fat, muscle and bone and some of the percentages which was pretty cool - and no I am not telling you the figures!!!

My weekend was fairly quiet and chilled too. On Saturday morning, with just over 2 weeks to go until the half marathon, I got up and completed a 11 mile run, meaning only another 2 miles to go! I then headed over to Altona to watch Darc's team take a true beating in the hockey before having a relaxing night in, watching the Ned Kelly film to find out the story behind him (it was actually a pretty good film). On Sunday we went to the Melbourne Vixens penultimate home game at the Hisense arena against the NSW Swifts. It was a great game which was close the whole way through until the last quarter where unfortunately the Swifts run away with it. After we headed to DFO shopping outlet in Southwarf so I could kit Darc out with some much need smart causal clothes and shirts, which I must say actually suit him and look pretty good!!!

Anyway that's about all from me, now I've bored you to tears, I hope all you are well and I'm sending lots of love across the pond,

xoxo
